Nebula Eyes was one of my first attempts at understanding how to add reflections into the eyes of my portrait subjects. One of the trainees volunteered to be my subject. This 9″ x 12″ original was done using pastel pencils and charcoal on 90 # black paper. It is not mounted on a backer board.

I asked Mim what color they called the eyes of this trainee and the translation turned out to be “red building (clay).” I don’t know if they used it for bricks or for skim coating like you would see on an adobe house. The answer of “red building” (the clay part I learned later was implied) took me aback for a moment until she explained a little more. – Su
